Paige Wise from Sports Therapy Wise gives us a brief look at whether cyclists would benefit from Sports Therapy Treatment
Would a cycling athlete benefit from Sports Therapy treatment? The answer is YES!
What is Sports Therapy?
As stated by the ‘Society of Sports Therapists’: Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.
Sports Massage should be used by an athlete whether they are injured or not!
One of the most popular treatments for sporting athletes is SPORTS MASSAGE due to its array of fantastic benefits both physical, physiological and psychological, such as:
Physical effects include pumping/stimulating the circulatory system. Massage will help to open and dilate blood vessels by increasing blood flow. Massage also stimulates lymph fluid which can build up due to injury. Massage acts as a pump to move around vital nutrients and energy to repair damaged tissues.
Increased tissue permeability to help open cell membranes to enhance diffusion of oxygen, lymphatic fluid and nutrients to again help repair and remove waste products such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. This will speed up your recovery!!
Break down scar tissue by using rigger point technique therapy and frictions which can be used during a sports massage to break down adhesions (knots in the muscle bulk) and scar tissue to help increase range of motion and flexibility.
Stretching to help stretch muscle fibres by improving muscle elasticity that cannot be stretched in usual methods. Massage can stretch the muscle fascia that surrounds the muscle to release tension and pressure to help the muscle function and grow.
Pain reduction is a key element of sports massage by removing tension and waste products via the release of endorphins!
Relaxation is generated via increased muscle temperature, stretching and stimulation of circulation. Stimulation of the muscles mechanoreceptors cause a reflex relation and also helps decreased stress and anxiety for the mind and body, leaving the athlete feeling invigorated.
Prevent injury and enhance recovery!
When can massage be used?
Pre-event- short, stimulating 15-45 minutes before event to specific areas of body that will be used in the activity
Post-event- within 1-2hrs after the event to normalise body tissues
Restorative – during training which allows athlete to train harder and longer and also to prevent injury
Rehabilitative- to reduce pain caused by injury and help reduce muscle soreness (DOMS) pre and post exercise or competition by reducing recovery time
-Help to monitor a specific injury or condition e.g. a tender knee from running
-Help to correct posture and positional joint faults
-Help to rehabilitate and promote normal function
Combined with or alongside other manual therapy treatments, sports massage can be very effective.
